For Auckland‑based Bennett Developments, their civil contracting portfolio spans everything from pavement work, park upkeep and playgrounds to subdivision development and larger infrastructure projects. This breadth of work has made adaptability not just an advantage, but a necessity. It’s also why owner Peter Bennett has added another Cat 305 CR mini excavator to BenDev’s ever-growing fleet.

It’s 305 number four, to be exact, joining two other Next Gen 305s and an older 305E series. And their new machine is already earning its keep on two adjacent sites in Drury, south of Auckland, involving intersection upgrades and a new train station.
“The Cat 305 is like a Swiss army knife on these sorts of projects,” Peter says. “They’re big enough that you can do a lot with them, and at the same time they’re small enough that you have no problems getting into some pretty tight spots.”
With an operating weight in the mid‑five‑tonne range, a compact radius design and the improved power and responsiveness of Cat’s Next Gen platform, the 305 CR sits in a sweet spot for civil contractors needing versatility without excess bulk.
Designed to meet infrastructure demands, it delivers enhanced hydraulic performance with higher breakout force and deeper digging capability, while its compact swing and stable footprint enable operators to work confidently in confined spaces. These gains in capability are matched by noticeable gains in day-to-day productivity, says Peter.
“With the Next Gen series, the improvements have been incredible. We’ve found the efficiency on these machines is a big step forward, even just with the actual speed of the machine and the movements as well.”
This has proved particularly relevant in the current operating environment, he says, where fluctuating fuel costs remain front of mind.
“Of course, it’s something everyone is thinking about at the moment. Like all our Cat machines, the fuel economy on the 305 is pretty outstanding.”
That’s thanks to a Cat C1.7 turbo engine, combined with standard auto idle, auto engine shutdown and efficient load‑sensing hydraulics with a variable‑displacement pump. Keeping fuel burn lower without compromising performance, it’s one of the reasons Peter has kept with Cat over BenDev’s eight-year tenure.

“Like most companies at the start, it was basically a one-man band,” he says. “I was originally a builder, but I’d always had a real love for the machinery side.”
That interest quickly translated into investment. When BenDev first set out, the decision was made to buy Cat equipment, starting with two second-hand machines.
“We actually still have those two original Cat machines working all day, every day,” Peter says. “That was a big part of why we went with Cat from the beginning. The reliability, that’s what they’re known for. We knew it was a long-term investment we were making, and so we were happy to go that way.”
As the business grew, so did their fleet. These days, BenDev’s diggers are entirely Cat. “It’s nice when everything’s the same colour,” Peter laughs. “We’ve got the 301.8 as our smallest, the 305E, now three Next Gen 305s, a 315 and a 323.”
Also included in their Cat lineup are a Next Gen D3 dozer and a 299D3 compact track loader with a GB124 Smart Grader Blade attachment. That balance gives BenDev the flexibility to move easily between council, commercial and privately delivered works, supporting everything from enabling and bulk earthworks through to finishing and specialist packages across Auckland and north Waikato.

As for why another 305? “The other three were already busy,” he explains. “With the variety of work we do, whatever needs to be done, we can do it with the 305.”
Operator comfort is another area where the Next Gen machines have set a new baseline. Peter says the cab environment has made a tangible difference over long days on site. “The seats are probably the most comfortable we’ve ever sat in,” he says. “Cat seats have always stood out.”
And, of course, features such as Bluetooth connectivity and low noise levels contribute to that comfort. “We don’t have to stop what we’re doing to take a call. When you’re in the machine all day, you don’t want excess noise and everything that goes along with it. It’s just super quiet and super comfortable.”

Beyond the iron, Peter places significant value on dealer support. He points to the long-standing relationship BenDev has built with its sales team, as well as the wider parts and service network. BenDev also relies on genuine Cat parts and a suite of digital tools to manage the fleet. VisionLink, Cat Inspect, SIS2GO and parts.cat.com are all used regularly, allowing parts to be ordered directly from site and delivered to the yard within days.
VisionLink, the Cat fleet management software, allows BenDev to gather data generated by their Cat assets and serves it up in easy-to-digest bites. This allows Peter to review the data, and get a full picture of his fleet, including location, health and productivity insights, and make more informed decisions about job sites. The latest 305 has also been specified with an eye to the future, with Cat’s Ease of Use system mounting and wiring already integrated into the boom.
“We’re looking at possibly running 3D GPS on that machine. Having all the mounts ready will make that process a lot easier.”
For Peter, the decision to continue investing in equipment with Terra Cat isn’t just about performance or specifications. “There’s definitely an expectation when you turn up to site with a Cat that you’re there to do a good job,” he says. “You’re not going to break down and cause delays. That matters for us.”
For a business built on versatility, reliability and trust, it’s a reputation BenDev is happy to arrive with, and one that keeps machines like the Cat 305 at the centre of their operation.
